What a kitchen remodel usually includes
Most kitchen projects fall into one of three sizes:
- Refresh: paint or refaced cabinets, new hardware, a new backsplash, lighting and fixtures. The layout stays the same.
- Mid-range remodel: new cabinets and countertops, sink and faucet, flooring, and often new appliances, still mostly in the same footprint.
- Full remodel: walls moved or removed, plumbing and electrical relocated, an island added, new ventilation. This is where design and permits matter most.
Knowing which of these you want, even roughly, helps a contractor give you a realistic estimate on the first visit.
Planning tips for Boise-area kitchens
- Moving the sink, range or walls changes everything. Relocating plumbing, gas or a load-bearing wall adds trades, engineering and permit work. Keeping the footprint is the single biggest way to control cost.
- Countertops run on their own schedule. Stone and quartz tops are usually templated after the cabinets are installed and fabricated afterward, so expect a gap of a week or more between cabinets and counters.
- Ventilation: a range hood that vents outdoors works far better than a recirculating one. Ask how the duct will be routed.
- Hard water: much of the Treasure Valley has hard water. It's worth asking about faucet and fixture finishes that hold up to mineral spots, and whether a softener or filter fits your plan.
- Older Boise homes: if your home was built before 1978, painted surfaces may contain lead. Contractors disturbing that paint are expected to follow EPA lead-safe work practices.
- Plan a temporary kitchen. A fridge, microwave and folding table in another room makes a multi-week remodel much easier to live through.
What affects the cost
Kitchen prices vary widely, so we won't quote a number. The main cost drivers are cabinet type (stock, semi-custom or custom), countertop material, whether plumbing, gas or walls move, appliance choices, flooring, and how much electrical work is needed for new lighting and outlets. The best way to compare is to get written estimates that list the same scope line by line.
Permits and hiring checklist
- Cosmetic work like cabinets and counters often doesn't need a building permit, but new or moved electrical, plumbing, gas and structural work generally does. Your city's building department has the final word.
- Electrical and plumbing work in Idaho must be done by appropriately licensed tradespeople.
- Verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and ask for proof of liability insurance.
- Get a written estimate that spells out what's included, the payment schedule and the expected timeline.

Common questions
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
A cosmetic refresh can take days to a couple of weeks. A full remodel with layout changes commonly takes several weeks of construction, plus design, permit and material lead time beforehand. Your contractor can give you a schedule for your specific project.
Can I keep my existing cabinets?
Often, yes. If the cabinet boxes are solid, refacing or painting them and changing doors and hardware can update a kitchen for much less than replacement. Ask the contractor to look at their condition.
Do you install kitchens yourselves?
No. We're a free referral service. We pass your request to an independent local contractor, who gives you their own estimate and does the work if you hire them.
