Is your basement a good candidate?
Many newer Treasure Valley homes sit on crawl spaces rather than full basements. Basements are more common in some older Boise homes, foothill homes and certain subdivisions. If you have one, check these first:
- Ceiling height: ducts, beams and pipes can limit usable height and affect the layout.
- Moisture: look for damp spots, efflorescence (white residue) or musty smells, and fix grading, gutters and drainage before finishing.
- Radon: radon is found in many Idaho homes. A simple test before you finish is inexpensive, and mitigation is easier before the walls go up.
Bedrooms need egress
A basement bedroom generally needs an emergency escape opening, usually an egress window with a properly sized window well, under residential building codes. Adding one means cutting the foundation, so it's a big part of the budget. Ask your contractor early if you want a legal bedroom.
What's typically involved
- Framing exterior and interior walls, with insulation suited to below-grade walls
- Electrical: outlets, lighting, smoke and CO alarms
- Heating and cooling to the new rooms
- Drywall, doors, trim, paint and flooring that tolerates below-grade conditions
- Optional bathroom, wet bar or kitchenette, which adds plumbing (and sometimes a pump)
Permits and hiring checklist
- Finishing a basement usually needs a building permit plus electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits for that work. Confirm with your city.
- Verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance.
- If you're thinking about a rental unit, ask the city about the rules first. Those rules are different from a family room.

How Boise Remodel Finder works
We're a free referral service, not a contractor. We pass your request to an independent local contractor, who contacts you and gives you their own estimate. We may receive a referral fee from the contractor.
Before hiring, verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses and get a written estimate.
Common questions
How long does it take to finish a basement?
Many basement projects take several weeks of construction once permits are issued, longer if a bathroom or egress window is added.
Can I add a bathroom in the basement?
Usually, yes. If the sewer line is higher than the basement floor, a pump system may be needed. A contractor can check during the estimate.
Should I test for radon first?
It's a good idea. Testing is inexpensive and it's much easier to add mitigation before the basement is finished.
