Common bathroom projects
- Tub-to-shower conversion: removing a little-used tub for a walk-in shower, often with a bench and grab bars.
- Vanity, fixtures and lighting: a quicker update that keeps the layout and plumbing in place.
- Tile and flooring: new shower walls, a tiled floor, or replacing dated surround panels.
- Accessibility and aging in place: low or curbless shower entries, grab bars with proper blocking, comfort-height toilets, wider doorways.
- Full renovation: new layout, relocated fixtures, a larger shower, or a double vanity.
What to ask about before work starts
- Waterproofing. Tile is not waterproof on its own. Ask what waterproofing system goes behind the shower tile and under the floor, since this is what prevents hidden leaks and rot.
- Ventilation. An exhaust fan should vent to the outside, not into the attic. A properly sized fan protects paint, grout and framing from moisture.
- Hard water. Treasure Valley water tends to be hard. Glass shower doors, dark fixtures and some tile finishes show mineral spots more than others, so pick materials you're happy to maintain.
- What's behind the wall. Older homes can hide old supply lines, worn subfloor or past water damage. A good estimate explains how surprises will be priced.
What affects the cost
Bathroom costs depend mostly on whether fixtures move, the size and type of shower, tile choice and how much of it there is, the vanity and countertop, and whether you need new electrical for lighting or heated floors. Smaller bathrooms aren't always proportionally cheaper because the trades and fixtures are similar. Compare written estimates with the same scope.
Permits and hiring checklist
- Moving plumbing, adding circuits or changing a fan usually needs a permit, and that work must be done by appropriately licensed tradespeople in Idaho. Check with your city's building department.
- Verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance.
- Ask how long the bathroom will be out of service. If it's your only one, say so up front.

How Boise Remodel Finder works
We're a free referral service, not a contractor. We pass your request to an independent local contractor, who contacts you and gives you their own estimate. We may receive a referral fee from the contractor.
Before hiring, verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses and get a written estimate.
Common questions
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A vanity-and-fixture update can take a few days. A full remodel with a new tiled shower commonly takes a few weeks, depending on scope, inspections and material lead times.
Is a tub-to-shower conversion a good idea?
For many households it is, especially for easier access. If it's the only tub in the house, consider whether you or future buyers will want one.
Can you help with grab bars or a curbless shower?
Yes. Mention accessibility in your request so we can refer you to a contractor who does that kind of work.
