Wood or composite in Idaho's climate
Treasure Valley summers bring strong sun and heat, and winters bring freeze-thaw cycles. Both are hard on decks.
- Pressure-treated wood costs least up front but needs regular cleaning and sealing.
- Cedar looks great and resists decay but still needs finishing to stay that way.
- Composite and PVC cost more up front and need little upkeep. Dark colors can get hot in full sun, so ask to see samples outside.
Repair or replace?
Surface boards are the easy part. The important pieces are the ledger (where the deck attaches to the house), the posts, footings and railings. Soft wood, wobbly railings, rust on connectors or a ledger without proper flashing are reasons to have a contractor look closely. Sometimes new decking on the old frame makes sense; sometimes the frame is the problem.
Permits, HOAs and shade
- Many cities require a permit for decks attached to the house or more than about 30 inches above the ground. Footings must meet the local frost-depth rule. Check with your city's building department.
- Many subdivisions in Meridian, Eagle, Kuna and Nampa need HOA approval for decks, pergolas and patio covers.
- A pergola or solid patio cover makes a west-facing deck much more usable on hot afternoons, and a cover may need its own permit.
Hiring checklist
- Verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance.
- Ask what fasteners and connectors will be used and how the ledger will be flashed.
- Get the material, railing and stair details in the written estimate.

How Boise Remodel Finder works
We're a free referral service, not a contractor. We pass your request to an independent local contractor, who contacts you and gives you their own estimate. We may receive a referral fee from the contractor.
Before hiring, verify the contractor's Idaho contractor registration and insurance with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses and get a written estimate.
Common questions
When is the best time to build a deck in Boise?
Decks can be built much of the year, but spring and early summer are the busiest. Getting estimates in late winter helps you get on a schedule.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
Often, yes, especially for decks attached to the house or higher off the ground. Rules vary by city, so confirm with yours.
Can you help with a small deck repair?
Yes. Smaller repairs like boards, stairs and railings are welcome. Mention the details in your request.
